Social-Emotional Learning at SKE
We offer social-emotional learning opportunities at SKE on a regular basis. In addition to receiving specific lessons from our SEL teacher this year, there are also as-needed conversations and supports offered. Between the role of the SEL teacher, classroom teacher-facilitated learning around personal and social responsibility, as well as periodic guest presenters, we are intentionally working to support our School Community Student Learning Goal, which includes the following elements:
- Promoting, nurturing and developing a growth mindset, stamina for learning and resiliency to challenge
- Approaching and supporting our learners through a holistic lens, recognizing the interconnectedness of physical and mental wellness

Primary Snapshot
Students have been receiving a weekly lesson in Social Emotional Learning at S.K.E. The objective of SEL is first to help students acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions. Primary students are learning about peacefulness, anger, anxiety, sadness, confidence, happiness, and love. Students are able to associate emotions with facial expressions, body language and words. They are able to express and describe their feelings as well the feelings of others. Students understand they have the power to grow happiness, love and confidence in themselves and others, through kindness.
Intermediate Snapshot
Our Intermediate student learning consists of perspective-taking, empathy, how to establish and maintain healthy and positive relationships/friendships. Kindness, respect, trust, active listening, solving problems peacefully and respectfully appreciating differences will continue as our learning focus for the rest of the year.
The Peaceful Spot
Students have access to a Peaceful Spot or Calm Corner in their classroom. Each spot has an Emotion Check-In for students to identify how they are feeling, and a Coping Toolbox which contains a variety of choices for students to use. Some of these items are breathing exercises, a stuffy to snuggle, calming colouring, fidgets, and also books like “Eye Spy” or “Where’s Waldo” as research suggests these types of books can provide a mind reset. Students know they can go to this spot when needed for a quick reset.
